My home on the web changes address

January 30th, 2010 by olympicmew

This service by Jamendo is a true mess, and the company doesn’t have enough money to keep their services up-to-date. So I took the chance and merged my music blog with my other blog at Wordpress.com, with a new address, new amazing design and soon more contents. Hope you like my new website! I imported all my previous posts there, so don’t worry about them.

A step in the past to jump towards future.

Today I tidied up the room destinated to be my recording studio.

It was a room I frequented so much in my childhood. So many memories.

And I’m starting to make posts short like Japanese’s :D , ok I’ll say something more. In these days my mood changes so often, but slants a little towards sadness. In the upcoming weeks there will be so many beautiful things happening: in February the new BINECKS’ single will be out, I’ll host a French student, in March I’ll finally play to Pokémon SoulSilver and the BINECKS’ album will be out too. But… now what I’m supposed to do? Musical inspiration lacks, school is boring, that nice girl so lovely to me now prefers spending time with one of my best friends (hiiii, I love you!* <3 ) and I do nothing else than pressing the refresh button on Google Reader, Gmail, my favorite forum and Facebook, hoping something out-of-routine happens.

The problem is that I need love from someone different than my beautiful friends ^^. Full stop.

P.S. This is a done-in-15-minutes recording of the Japanese version of Durch Den Monsun for a friend of mine who’s a Tokio Hotel fan. I’m very bad in German pronounce and I went a bit out of tune in the verse, but that’s it.

Mindflow #3

When I don’t want to study I’m able to do things I never could do otherwise. Today I’ve done the new arrangement for the album version of Don’t Forget, with a more BINECKS sound (what I thought the song would be when I first made it, but I wasn’t so good at guitar and made a horrible puppy punk version) and a totally so SIAM SHADE-ish new section replacing the ZIGGY citation.

Plus, I solved the problem I had with the chord progression of USELESS SCHOOL. It was perfect when I sung it until the end of the first chorus, because I shift from C to F and couldn’t manage to return from F to C. Now there’s a little solo guitar part above a Gm7 chord and the song flows good. ^^

Experiment #1 – dance bandpass à-la-BINECKS

January 15th, 2010 by olympicmew

This is the first post of a series of experiments I’m doing for try on the field some methods/effects I thought but never used in real songs.

Today I tried to do a typical effect of dance music often used by BINECKS. It’s difficult to explain, anyway try to hear it in their My ghost from 0:54.

Got it? I tried to add the same effect on a song by UVERworld, PRIME. It’s clearly audible in the right channel, as the BINECKS’ one.

Dance bandpass à-la-BINECKS added to PRIME by UVERworld

I made it sending a copy of the original signal to a bus with reverb (to mess all), high-Q bandpass with 4-bars cyclic automation, compressor and tremolo inserted and then panned on right. It sounds good?

YAAAAAAAAY!!!! NEW BINECKS ALBUM!

Music should be thought first of all to entertain.

January 14th, 2010 by olympicmew

If you can say something right and useful is a good thing. But don’t lose sight on the main aim of music.

My desk. Find the Japanese thing.

My desk. Find the Japanese thing.

You and who listen to you must enjoy your music, it should leave something in your and their heart. Don’t make something only you and few chosen people can understand and enjoy.

Anyway, do your best, if you feel that one of your song is too simple, complicate it.

Don’t let you being too influenced by others’ tastes. If Lady Gaga sells 24k of her first album in a week you don’t have to make that kind of music if you don’t like it.

Finally, is likely that in the other side of the world people’s mind work the opposite of yours. Maybe the people you know would buy no one copy of an UVERworld album, even if they can.

Their first album in Japan sold 60k in a week. Oh My Gaga!

Mindflow #2

Hello guys! ^^ Today I’ll talk about the two songs I wrote before Don’t Forget and my projects on a 12-track album. Hope you like it ;)

The first song I wrote that will be included in my album is called USELESS SCHOOL. No, the title doesn’t say all :D , and I’m going to tell you why.

It was a day between March 11st and 21st 2009 (I don’t remember) when a such bizarre fact happened. Going to school, I forgot to take books and all the stuff with me :D . When I realized it my mother, who drove me in the city where my school is (I live about 10 miles from it), turned very angry and took me back home. In the end I didn’t go to school that day, and with a sense of guilt and anger I started to sing something. Wow, I’m making a song!, I thought, took a notebook and started to write down the first lines of it. The song began taking form as a strong, heavy metal song with aggressive lyrics, but slowly changed mood in an emotional, high and somewhat “epic” song as I wrote it down and got relaxed thinking to the girl I loved at the time with a feeling of… I can’t describe it. Anyway it doesn’t matter.

About the other song… I wrote in a totally different context. But the person I loved is still the same. That song is called HER.

It was four months after, around the very end of July. I discovered months earlier that the girl I was loving totally played with me. She saw me as a pain despite she acted oppositely in front of me. So I tried to ignore her, without success. But that night I had an odd dream. Me in my town, a known car under my eyes. She, making a huge misspell. His parents proud of her. Her burning dead eyes reflecting on the glass. Me, enjoying her misspell. My first dream where she looked for what really she was. The afternoon of the next day, being in full boredom, I recall that dream. And lines began to sing loud in my mind. Happy of that I take the notebook and start to write down. The lyrics of this song didn’t come flawlessly as with USELESS SCHOOL, but they were really cool. And the music too, rensembling a mix between a DETROX-tasting mood* and the new Dream Theater album I bought some days before. Actually is the song I’m more proud of. The lyrics match perfectly with music, and flow endlessly without rest. It’s a really cool song and I can’t wait to record it.

My relationship with music & influences

January 12th, 2010 by olympicmew

Uhmmm… it’s a wide thread. Anyway, I’ll try to tell the story about me and music, and I’ll let you know some of the artist that affected and continue to affect my concept of music.

When I was a child I used to listen to EVERYTHING I found on my way. Namely, all songs aired on radio, all that junk called “children music” :D and… wow, I can’t believe it, classical CDs. I was blessed by God! XD

Maybe that lucky encounter with something different influenced my tastes later (nah, to be different from others is in my nature), anyway I hadn’t a remarkable bond with music until I entered in middle school. I used to read all my textbooks before the beginning of school so I didn’t need to study during the year (if only I had the will to do it even today… XD), and for music this was a bless. Listen to me: music studies in Italian school are totally useless. All I used to do from middle school onwards was REPEATING every single year the same notions about do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-si (as we call the notes C-D-E-F-G-A-B), the notation and, worst of all, PLAYING THAT FU***NG RECORDER everyday! Every person I know hates studying music at school, and that’s the reason. Returning to me, I read all the words written in my music books (please note that at school we read very few pages of them) and learnt so many interesting things about strange terms like “key”, “sharp” and “flat”, “chords”, “major”, “minor” and so on. I should thanks those books if I can say about a song I like “I like so much the arrangement and the chord progression of this song” instead of some awful expressions as “I like the rhythm of this song” (?). Full of all those big words I pretended with the foolish mind I had at the time to “make” some pitiful tries of “music”. I’ll talk you about them another time, now let’s go on.

My bond with music changed suddenly when they gave me an iPod as a gift. At first I filled it with the pop stuff I had at the time, but some months after, September 2007, I stumbled upon the song I post below. It’s called å›ã®ãã§ã°ã€œãƒ’カリã®ãƒ†ãƒ¼ãƒžã€œ (Kimi no soba de ~Hikari no Thema~) and was at the time the Japanese ending of Pokémon anime (yeah, pocket monsters are my great passion since I was 7).

Mindflow #1

January 10th, 2010 by olympicmew

Today I’m a bit down. Can’t do everything. Don’t want to do everything. :(

Since August I wrote so many songs, something like six. Added to Don’t Forget and the other two songs I wrote earlier they are 9 songs. Nine songs for the 12-track album :O

The first is named Found The Love. Talks about when I discovered the joy of being with other people. Is a nice power ballad with a so nostalgic chord progression in the verse. Towards the end enters the electric guitar and the melody goes higher and higher, closing quiet as it started.

The second song is called Lovely Face. Feels like this SIAM SHADE song (the video below is a cover):

YouTube Preview Image

It talks about the start of a new love. You know when there’s that beautiful girl you can’t wait to see everyday? Yeah, something like that. In the bridge there’s a key change and a nice progression leading to the guitar solo.

The third song is Solinsieme. It’s a portmanteu of two Italian words, solo meaning “alone” and insieme meaning “together”. The lyrics are in Italian, and are a bit abstract. Anyway, talks about the feeling you have when you’re alone and the whole world seems don’t understand you. In that situation, once I thought that maybe somewhere in the world there’s a person feeling just like you, and maybe that person is thinking exactly the same about you. The chorus says something like “why I see myself in that mirror when I know that you are beyond the mirror? I would break this mirror and embrace you, to be no more alone“, I like it so much. Speaking about music, it’s only me and the piano.

Next comes Driven. It’s so aggressive, heavy. Its lyrics are related to the story the album’s going to narrate. There’s so much rapping. To be short, it talks about love driving us to do things we’ll never do otherwise. Even something bad. It’s not something really happened to me, but I thought it would be cool talking about it.

A song I wrote about one week ago is called glamorous. Maybe it’s my more serious song. It talks about… how society cares about women today. Children having to behave different if they are males or females, all those sexy chicks on TV, the deplorable use of the term “chick” itself when addressing pretty women and all that stuff. All with a cool Spanish feel and a grotesque interlude depicting a human corrida with a lap-dancer taking the place of the bull. Strange but cool.

In the end, the late song I wrote is totally different. It talks about popstars having teens praising them, all the envious guys addressing them “faggot” for that and so on. Not for anything else is called Wanna Be A Jonas :D

OK, I got to go. Hope you enjoyed this mindflow. Someday I’ll talk about the other two songs, USELESS SCHOOL and HER, and eventually post a video with me. Have a nice day! (^^)/~

P.S. I didn’t say all. In December I wrote a Christmas song too. I’ll talk about it next time. See ya!
